Know Your Rights

🛑 What Is the 4th Amendment?

The Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects you from unreasonable searches and seizures by the government.

You have the right to privacy in your home, your car, and your personal belongings.

  • You do not have to open your door to immigration or police officers unless they have a warrant signed by a judge.

  • You can ask to see the warrant through a window or slip it under the door.

  • You have the right to remain silent — you do not have to answer questions about your immigration status.

  • If you are stopped in public, you can ask if you are free to leave.

  • Do not lie or show false documents.

What to Do If They Come to Your House

Stay calm and don’t open the door.

Ask for identification and if they have a warrant signed by a judge.

If they do not have a valid warrant, you can refuse entry.

You can state:

"I do not consent to a search. I wish to remain silent. I want to speak with a lawyer."
